A per-90 figure is a player's total scaled to a full match: their total divided by the minutes they played, times 90.
Why per 90?
Totals favour players who play the most. A striker with 10 goals in 2,700 minutes and one with 6 goals in 900 minutes have very different rates: 0.33 and 0.60 goals per 90. Per-90 figures put regular starters, rotation players and substitutes on the same footing.
The calculation: total ÷ minutes played × 90. It is applied to counting stats such as goals, assists, shots, xG and tackles. It is not applied to things that are already rates or averages (pass accuracy, average rating).
Use a minimum
Small samples produce extreme numbers: one goal in a 10-minute cameo is 9 goals per 90. That is why PLStats' leaderboards let you set a minimum number of minutes. Around 900 minutes (ten full matches) is a common threshold; for a whole season, many analysts use 1,500 or more.
Minutes before 2024-25
For seasons before 2024-25, the data source does not publish minutes played, so PLStats estimates them from the line-ups and substitutions: a starter plays from kick-off, a substitute from the minute they came on, until they were taken off or sent off, otherwise to the 90th minute. Added time is not counted. Per-90 figures for those seasons are therefore close, but approximate.
